Our Principles and Values

The Values that Unite Us

We are an academic community dedicated to the highest standards of scholarship, personal integrity, responsible conduct, and respect for the individual. In support of these ideals, we value:

Integrity. The importance of personal integrity is reinforced by our honor code.

Dignity and respect for all individuals, always

Diversity in our community

Intellectual inquiry in the pursuit of truth

Responsibility and leadership to help create the environment we strive to achieve.

We live up to these values and work to support our collective and individual successes.

The Principles that Guide Us

We strive  to create a climate of genuine acceptance and will promote the values of diversity and inclusiveness. These values strengthen our community and are essential to our academic mission and institutional excellence.

We value diversity in all forms— including diversity of age, culture, disability, economic background, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, marital status, national origin, opinion, political affiliation, race, religious background, sexual orientation and veteran status.

We embrace our responsibility to:

Be a model of fairness and equal opportunity

To provide educational opportunities to broader communities found locally and nationally

To reflect the diversity of peoples, backgrounds, and experiences in the student body, faculty, administration and staff

To provide broad administrative, programmatic and academic support to achieve its institutional goals for diversity

To prepare students from all backgrounds and identities to live, work and thrive in a global society

To provide a welcoming and inclusive environment of mutual respect for students, faculty, staff and community, internally and externally, of all backgrounds and identities

Our community is as vibrant and supportive as it is because these principles are adopted and implemented  earnestly by our entire University community. We take responsibility, hold each other accountable, and recognize outstanding efforts related to these ideals.

We Stand by our Beliefs

At the University of Mary Washington, the principles of equal opportunity and affirmative action are practiced. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, disability, national origin, political affiliations, marital status, sexual orientation, sex, or age in recruiting, admitting, enrolling students or hiring and promoting faculty and staff members. We will not recognize or condone student, faculty, or staff organizations that discriminate in selecting members. Complaints of discrimination should be directed to the AA/EEO officer of the University.
